Choosing an option - groups
For this assignment, i have chosen the theme Groups. I believe this theme has massive potential. With groups there is an endless amount of options and ideas. The artists in groups are inspiring and their work has can give ideas. I believe Groups has more to it than most of the other options. I already have many plans on how to lay out my experiments and how i'll explore the idea of film photography is a still life.
JO WHALEY - ARTIST RESEARCH
Jo Whaley creates still life works. Jo Whaley combines painting with a camera, creating beautiful scenic images. This scenic art has many props, such as mango wrapped in rubber bands, or a burnt book with a ripped t-shirt. The images are very high quality. She uses a polaroid for her work. She creates 'sets' in a studio. Sets are where she creates her images, and her backdrops are hand painted by her. She alternates between portrait and landscape photographs.
'Suspension of Disbelief, 1995 is an image by Jo Whaley taken for her exhibition Natura Morta. Her style is interesting, using hand made backgrounds and touching props to create a still life. In this image there is a washing line with a t-shirt and a book attached. There are also 2 plants, one bottom right and another top left. The plants are stretching across the t-shirt, as if they are trying to touch. I think this is a reference to Michelangelo's 'The Creation of Adam', where both characters are almost touching. Both plants are blooming yellow and red flowers. The top left plant is thinner, 'skinnier'. The bottom right plant is obviously bigger and bushier, reaching upwards towards the other plant. The t-shirt behind this scene is ragged and in poor condition. It is filled with holes and rips, a lot of time has obviously passed. To the right of the t-shirt is is book. A dragonfly is resting on it. Its stained yellow and has a 'stab wound'. Its ripped and old, and is being held up by one peg. The background is gray and cloudy. This image tells a story, that's what i like about her work. However, some of her other images aren't as decipherable, leaving the viewer thinking what they represent.
groups homework
This homework was rushed and didn't take much time. Half of these images were taken with an actual set. I set up a white floor and background and put random groups of objects in the cameras view. This was effective as the background matched the floor. However the images had no meaning and were rushed. The other half of the images are rushed photos of random group of objects in my house. They have no meaning. If I were do do this again I would make the images geometrical and not rush them.
experimentation - GEOMETRICAL BOOKS
In this task i created a geometrical book with shapes and separate pages. I used the image from my homework with the 4 boxes and a white background. Printing is black and white and making a little book was interesting. The geometric shapes attract the watchers attention and are interesting to play around with to create new images. This was a fun activity and i enjoyed making the book.

GEOMETRICAL BOOK P2
For this task i created an extended book. I created another black and white fold out booklet. This time i used another image with some gaming supplies. This creates a longer book that is more interesting to observe how the image changes. This one wasn't geometrical so the next time I take images I'll make sure to lay them out the items geometrically.

GROUPS HOMEWORK 2
In this homework all the images taken are framed and have a proper background. All the images are taken using geometrical shapes that contrast each other and fit in with my experimentation. I made sure to place all the objects strategically so that they aren't just randomly placed. I am happy with how these images turned out and i like how they can go well with one another. If i were to do this again i would make the background a solid white and the background the same shade of white as the floor.
experimentation with shapes
Today, I experimented with a double sided A3 sheet. I printed a geometrical group photo on each side. A simple cut was done between the middle of 1/4 of the sheet, creating a seperate, moveable entity on the sheet. This allows for movement between the images. Folding the sheet of paper introduces a new image made with both original images. Each fold has its own geometrical image. For example the circular object combining with the cube. This interests the viewer. Both images are black and white. This is because they both look simpler and contrast with each other better.
EXPERIMENT 3
olivia parker - 30 image experimentation
Olivia Parker captures a variety of subjects, from still lifes to landscapes, with a unique style. Parker carefully plans her shots and enjoys experimenting with different techniques to create captivating images. Through her photography, she invites viewers to see the world in a fresh and unexpected way, encouraging them to explore hidden stories and think about the ordinary images she takes.
'Dragonfruit' is an image taken by Olivia Parker for her 2014 exhibition 'Still and Not So Still Life's'. The main focus of the image is the dragon fruit resting on a cement or stone block. Behind it is a misty, blurry mirror slightly reflecting the dragonfruits red and green. The mirror seems to bend in half, and is resting on what looks to be a wooden shelf. The background is a pitched black highlighting the dragonfruits exotic colour. The image itself may be described as a still life. The composition of the image leaves the watcher in a state of admiration. The image itself is compelling. Something about the simple props and what they are resting on makes the image seem rustic and 'old'.

group body parts
In this task I took images of two classmates. I made them the same composition, lighting and height. After some photoshop editing, I printed out the images in A3. Slowly, i found the midpoint of them both and cut them up into abstract groups of facial structures and parts. Combining these two images to make two people into one was interesting, and a group of 2 boys turned into 1. This group of images was composed to make one image. The image has an interesting yellow tint with a seemless background. Both boys have different facial features, such as : hair colour, props (airpods in one ear.) This task was very fun, if i were to do it again i would do it with 3 people (one person being female.)

GROUPS - MODERN BASICS
In this task i layed out multiple objects on a white stand. I used a hard white LED light to give it a modern, studio look. I used a hard white background to contrast fully the objects in frame. I used the same camera angle and height for all the images. The images contrast whats in them. They were very enjoyable to create finding ideas for modern images was fun. I think that next time i would take more images, and also have more items on hand to take images off.
GROUPS - MODERN BASICS 2
I like the task before this one more as all the images look the same, have the same tint of white and are all zoomed in. I would like to try replicate that look. In these images I used 2 separate groups of items. One group having model trucks and busses, another with cakes. To get the most detail i could, i manually set ISO, shutter speed and aperture. The background is a solid white. This contrasts with the colourful images in the foreground. These still lifes were fun to compose and to take images of.
In this experiment i used many new processes. For the background, i used an infinity screen. This way the images seem to have an infinite background. This is a massive upgrade compared to the previous experiment, where the background was had nothing on it. I also used different lighting techniques, using lights from far away and from close up, as well as changing the colour lighting.
This task used many different lighting processes and camera angles. This task i used a mixture of lights. For example a yellow and green light or a solid purple light. Using the infinity screen for the background, I took close-ups and middle ranged photographs. This was interesting because the super close ups gave a new perspective of the model perfume bottles.
FRAGMENTED COLOUR GROUPS
For this task I printed out to colour copies of the professional images i took. With the two images, I created a split down the middle from corner to corner. After, I took the separate colour segments and attached to to one another, creating a colour change effect. This was very interesting because both the images are fairly similar, so the split isn't really noticed and it look like a photoshopped image. The purple and orange contrast each other, and the fragmented segments seem to blend with each other.
|
GROUP COLOUR SECTIONS
In this task I printed out another professional colour image with a different yellow coloured one. I placed both images over each other, and using a scalpel I cut out identical sized shapes. I then stuck the yellow fragments into the pink image. This creates a very nice effect where the sections in yellow highlight the image. The dark pink really highlights the orange, and the colours compliment each other. If I were to do this task again i would do it with more than one other colour.

Plan for 10 hour GCSE
- IDEA 1 : Create a black cube probably 30cm x 30cm x 30cm. Cut out small segments of a image and stick them onto the cube. Groups of different colour segments will create one image on one side of the cube. Do this on all sides of the cube. OR, create many little cubes and stick my images on them. Create a group of these cubes and photograph them, or make them into a sculpture.
- IDEA 2 : Create a collage of segmented different colour images on black or white card.
- WHAT I NEED :
-Scissors
-Tape
-Black/white card
-Glue
-Printed Images
-Scalpel
-Cutting board
-Ruler
