I chose the photo Stranger No.1 by Shizuka Yokomizo. The theme of this photograph is openings.
This image has a border surrounding it, taken while looking through a framed window. In the window there are 6 segments and the frame is black. Looking inside you can see a man in the centre of the photograph and in the centre of the window frame. He has a telephone put against his ear and is looking directly at the camera. Around him the walls are painted a dull red and the ceiling is white. On the wall, there are 2 paintings. On on the farthest left and one on the right of the mans head. Right behind the man is an open door leading to what seems to be the rest of the house. The man is wearing a grey hoodie and short white shorts. Near to the bottom of the photograph there are more things. On the bottom right there is a black, leather sofa and on the left there is what seems to be another chair facing away from the camera. Looking closely the top of a wine glass is visible. This photo is a portrait, but is interesting because of the outer frame and the mans stance. The frame makes the photo seem as though it wasn't taken on a camera, but is a painting. This is also contrasted by the boring red on the wall and the surreal paintings.
I think Shizuka Yokomiza took this photo instantaneously and didn't plan it out carefully. The man in the photograph seems as though he doesn't expect to be photographed. Also, the fact he is pictured through a window adds to the effect of surprise on the man photographed. If I was challenged to taking a similar photo i would get someone to stand like the man near a framed window, go outside and take the photo. I would use a digital camera and props to imitate the original image. Props such as a wine glass and paintings, aswell as the red wall. If I would not be able to find a framed window or red background, I would create my own frame using black duct tape or sellotape, then take the picture looking through the frame i made looking at either a red light or red paper stuck together. This way i can make my own red background.
I really like this picture for multiple reasons. Firstly, the framing really makes the viewer imagine why the man is standing there. Also the actual photo looks like a painted portrait, but is in fact taken by a camera. This is contrasted by the paintings inside the room. This makes it seem that it is a paintings within a painting. The frame also helps this effect. The window has 6 segments, each one showing something different. The centre frames showing the man and the side frames showing the background and the objects in the photo. The way the picture is taken almost seems as though you are looking through a portal into another world. This portal effect is caused by the black outline of the photo. The colours in the photo don't necessarily contrast, but does feel almost sleepy because of the quality and how surreal it looks. When looking at the photo, people cant seem to shake the feeling that they've been there before, almost like Deja Vu. This is most probably achieved by the changing the brightness and contrast level either when using the camera or when editing.
My understanding of the picture changes because i got context on why and how the pictures were taken. The pictures were of strangers, and openings was used as a theme to show the inside of strangers minds and homes. Their facial expression are intense and confused.

In this task we had to recreate the artist we described above. My original plan was to carve out black paper into the from of a window and hand it from the ceiling to take pictures. That didn't work so i decided to just take the photos and edit them on photo shop. It would be EBI if i used my time better and added more props such as a frame. WWW was the composition of the photos. My intentions were to imitate the images from the author in some way, which i couldn't do. If I had added an actual background and took more images the i would have done better.
